Beach Access
Just a 10 min walk down the track from the properties lies Tahakopa Beach. This picturesque sandy beach is 4 kms long with sand dunes and cliff walks. Surrounded by nature and bird life it really feels untouched. Occasionally sea life can be spotted from the shore. A popular spot for surfing and kayaking. However due to the currents and strong tides, Swimming is not recommended.
Curio Bay, Kaka Point, and other beaches along the coastline are ideal for swimming.
Curio Bay is a favourite with locals. It boasts a golden sandy beach with a surf break. The bay is home to the rare Pahu Hector dolphin and features a petrified forest.
Waterfalls
We have a number of waterfalls in the region. One waterfall is located on the property and only accessible to our guests. Either take the easy 30 min walk, or a two minute drive. Hunt for Yabbies (freshwater crayfish) on your way!
The infamous Purakaunui Falls are located just ten minutes drive up the road. The walk to these falls through the Punga forest is also well worth a visit.
Also located in the region are the Koropuku Falls, Lower McLean & Upper McClean Falls and the Matai Falls.
Nature Walks & Wildlife
Amazing beach and nature walks accessible from your accommodation by foot. The Old Coach track loop takes 3-4 hrs and starts right from the Tahakopa Bay Retreat and Hideaway!
By car there are many walks around the Catlins Region. Explore the suspension bridges along the Catlins River Track, The Wisp Loop for forestry and mountain biking or the Cathedral Caves for beautiful coastline. For a quick wetlands and birdlife try the 30 min
Long Point located 21 kms north of the property is the coastal jewel for wildlife, the
location of a Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust reserve. Nature lovers will find plenty to enjoy here including​ NZ fur seals and sea lions, an assortment of sea birds and rare coastal plants.
Fishing
Discover the exhilarating experience of surfing in the Catlins. With its stunning coastal scenery and consistent waves, this area is perfect for both beginners and seasoned surfers. For board rentals, check out Catlins Surf Co., where you can find everything you need to hit the waves.
Local Shopping
The Closest services are in Papatowai. Includes the Papatowai Store and Food Truck. You can either drive or walk along Tahakopa Beach and through the Old Coach Track and over bridge to Papatowai Village. The Papatowai Store sells famous burgers, they also make delicious homemade pies, coffee and baking!
Owaka has a range of shops including a Four Square supermarket, pub, restaurant, cafe and gift shops.
There is a diverse range of fishing options; Sea and rock fishing as well as fly fishing in the rivers and estuaries, there’s something for everyone. The waters are home to a large variety of fish, including Blue Cod, Flounder, Whitebait, Crab, and Trout, making it an ideal destination for anglers.
Close to the properties in Owaka there is the Lumberjack Cafe & Restaurant, which we recommend booking. Also great food in the Owaka pub and Asian food truck down the main street.
